I've struggled for a couple of years now to get into a good morning devotional routine. I'd set my alarm, get up early, then wouldn't really be sure what to study. A devotional book wasn't enough, though very inspirational...I just really craved a deep personal Bible study. Yet though I was raised a Christian, I wasn't sure how to dive in again...
Let me back up. When my first son was a baby, I got my first iPhone. It was such a blessing, because I was able to read my Bible easily while I nursed him. It was the first time I actually read through the entire Bible. There was a special reverence in my son's room. I always felt closer to God in that room. It's where I dug deep into the Bible while nursing, prayed while walking my son to sleep, and heard God speaking - telling me things from His word to give me peace, comfort, and hope. It was amazing!
Then some things happened...and some more things happened. It has been a faith-trying few years including being technically homeless, having little to no income, betrayal, and going through depression exacerbated by having another baby and all the hormones that come with it. I felt like my close relationship with God was lost. Yet I knew He was still waiting for me with open arms. Every time I attempted to seek Him and find Him, I came up short. I just couldn't seem to get my heart into it.
But now I am here to share how I found God again and to encourage you to arm yourself for spiritual warfare so your peace cannot be shattered. These past few years have shown me just enough to catch a glimpse of how thick it is in the trenches of spiritual war, and I don't plan on letting down my guard again anytime soon, because I don't know how close I was to not making it out of my fog. That is why diving deep into a relationship with God is absolutely vital, ESPECIALLY as a leader and educator of young hearts.
So here's a little secret about studying the Bible...expect God to speak directly to you in your reading for that day. Oh my, yes He does!
First of all, grab a pen and a notebook or journal to record what God is going to reveal to you because it's going to be good! Get a glass of water because you want to be cleansed and refreshed from your night's sleep, and plain, clean, room temperature or warmish water is the best way to do it. A Bible highlighter is a great addition, though not required. And of course, you'll need a Bible. In addition, I like to use the Blue Letter Bible app to look up words and phrases in the concordance quickly and easily.
Here's my own personal Bible study plan:
Does it work? Try it and let me know. I personally have been shown some very clear answers from the Word of God, and even better, I have been given peace despite our uncertain circumstances. That's worth more to me than riches and lands.
